Can You Ignore a Chip in Your Enamel?

Posted on 12/10/2019 by Nicholas Dose
Can You Ignore a Chip in Your Enamel?Chipped teeth happen regularly, both from injury and from a tooth that is not in as good of condition as it could be. Our dentists have seen many types of chips. Some of them require treatment, while others are so minor they do not impact the integrity of the tooth.

The only way to know what type of treatment is necessary is for us to take a look at the chipped tooth and see what condition the tooth is in. From there, we can determine what needs to be done to correct the problem.

What Causes the Chipping Of The Enamel?

There are several ways someone can end up with a chip in the enamel of their tooth. First, it could be coming as a result of external injury. These are rare but valid circumstances. For those who have not had external injury, they could have used a hard object inside their mouth that injured the tooth. The other common way patients end up with a chip in the enamel of a tooth is by having a tooth with a cavity that has not been treated.

Do Chips All Require Treatment?

The answer is no. Some teeth do need treatment for the chips, while others only need a simple buffing to smooth the edges. If the tooth is sharp where it chipped, then it needs to be smoothed out to protect sensitive tissues within the mouth. However, some chips need bigger procedures, such as dental bonding to help protect the integrity of the tooth.

Call us today and schedule a visit to have your chipped enamel checked and corrected before it becomes bigger and causes more damage to your tooth. We can also check the health of your mouth overall and see if there is anything that needs to be done to protect your teeth so this does not happen again in the future.
