Flossing: To Use or Not to Use Waxed or Flavored Floss. That is the Question

added on: April 25, 2021

Young man flossing his teeth

You probably know that you’re supposed to floss your teeth daily. However, with so many different options available at your local store, you might not know what the best floss option is – flavored and un-waxed or waxed.

The truth is that the best floss option is one that you are going to use, so discovering your own personal preference is essential. Understanding the pros and cons of waxed and flavored floss will help you to make a decision about which is right for your lifestyle.

The Pros and Cons of Waxed Floss

Some people simply prefer waxed floss over flavored, un-waxed options. While it might not have an interesting taste, waxed floss is typically easier to maneuver, and you may just like the way that it feels. Waxed floss is good for teeth that are cramped or tightly wedged together, and it is often recommended for beginners who are just getting into the habit of flossing.

One negative aspect of waxed floss that is a turnoff for some people is the coating. Some waxed options are coated with Teflon or petroleum. If you are concerned about consuming industrial chemicals, un-waxed options might be a better choice.

The Pros and Cons of Flavored Floss

Unwaxed, flavored floss is sometimes a good choice for people who need extra incentive to floss. Flavored with mint, cinnamon, or other flavorings, flavored floss can make the process of cleaning in between the teeth more pleasant. Unwaxed floss tends to be thinner than the waxed variety. Additionally, a good flavor can make your breath feel fresher after cleaning your teeth.
