Why Dental Veneers Need to Be Replaced if They Break

added on: April 25, 2021

Nicholas Dose, DMD Family DentistryPeople are sometimes surprised to find out that if their veneers break, they only have one option – to replace them. You cannot go without a new covering, as that can be painful, plus it can cause a significant amount of damage to your tooth.

If you have veneers, then you know that nearly all sets of veneers are considered a permanent alteration. Only some of the newest veneers are put on without removing part of your tooth to make the procedure work.

Tooth Trimming Is a Part of the Veneer Process

Before getting veneers, your dentist is going to take a part of your tooth off. This is just a tiny bit, but enough to make it to where your veneers fit seamlessly. Veneers are incredibly thin sheets of porcelain, in most cases. They fit into the gap created by tooth trimming.

Once your enamel has been trimmed down, it cannot be replaced nor will it grow back. This means if your veneers break off, you need to have something else put in place to cover those areas. Otherwise, your tooth is going to be incredibly sensitive and prone to problems like breaking and tooth decay.

While the tooth trimming process is often painless, it can still leave your teeth in a weakened state. If you ever have even a portion of your veneer crack or break off, you need to go back into the dentist and have it replaced. Don’t take the chance that your tooth might be alright if you go without another veneer.

It isn’t worth the chance that your tooth might also break right off if you bite down wrong without that extra protection. For more information on dental veneers, ask your dentist the next time you go in for a cleaning or examination.
