Common Dental Appliances and Procedures Explained

added on: April 25, 2021

Nicholas Dose, DMD Family DentistryWhen you head in to any medical or dental setting and a professional tells you that you need a certain procedure done often you will have to do a double take.

“You want to put a …. what in?” It’s OK, we totally understand.

These are things that we have to deal with every day and you just heard about now. Why would you know what a dental onlay is?

Have no fear, whether you are reading this now for personal education or if you have to do that double take at the office, we have you covered. Here’s a list of common dental appliances and what they are used for.

Composite Fillings and Dental Bonds

Both composite fillings and dental bonds are restorative procedure that are made of the same material – composite resin. Composite resin is a mixture of plastic, glass and a bonding resin that form a tooth colored material that we use to fix teeth.

In the case of cavities, we can give you a filling that no one will ever notice using this substance. When your front teeth have cracks or chips, we can use this substance to repair them and make them whole again in the dental bonding procedure.

Onlays – Crowns and Veneers

When a tooth is past the point of needing minor touchups to fix them, onlays are the answer. Crowns are designed to fit over teeth that are too structurally insecure to continue to function.

They give you the ability to keep the tooth you have, and to continue using it. Veneers are designed to breathe new life into your front teeth by fixing everything from spacing issues to size and shape.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are designed to replace teeth that are lost. They are surgically implanted into your jaw and perform in much the same way that a real tooth would, by allowing you to eat and speak normally. All this while helping to maintain healthy bone levels in your jaw.
